You Showed Up. That Takes Courage. And Faith
The shift happened when I realized the "check-box" version of Christianity wasn't just exhausting; it was a distraction.
I saw that the institutional structure often produces an illusion of salvation...
We often travel to extreme places or go to the darkest corners of our community to share the gospel, when right in front of me, in the very structure that claims righteousness, stood brothers and sisters in need of salvation.
In Anthony De Mello's book, The Song of the Bird, he shares an ancient Christian legend:
"When the son of God was nailed to the cross and gave up his spirit, he went straight down to hell from the cross and set free all the sinners who were in torment. And the devil wept and mourned for he thought he would get no more sinners for hell.
"Then God said to him, 'Do not weep, for I shall send you all those holy people who have become self-complacent in the consciousness of their goodness and self-righteous in their condemnation of sinners. And hell shall be filled up once more for generations until I come again.'"
My soul ached for a real and raw relationship with God. I was tired of replacing a true, living connection with the Creator with an illusion.
In an act of courage, but most of all, faith, I stepped away from the noise to see if I could find the "trueness" of my salvation beneath the layers of programming.
Deconstruction...this word is misunderstood and thought to be the end of the road, but it's the clearing of debris, a shining of the light in the darkness.
And I saw there is an advantage in wisdom over simpleminded folly as light has an advantage over darkness. - Ecclesiastes 2:13
Simpleminded folly is not unintelligent. In religious circles it is practicing faith...in the dark. Wisdom turns on the light.
I turned on the light...
